The campaign was organised by the Marine Science Group at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), in cooperation with be’ah.
Titled, ‘We are responsible for our beaches’ the campaign brought with each other much more than 1,000 individuals in order to market environmental awareness, mentioned Hisham Sulaiman Khalifa al Kharousi, head of Marine Science Group at SQU.
He added. “The campaign was held on Friday (September 20) from 4pm to 6pm. People from different wilayats such as Seeb, Shinas, Suwaiq, Mussanah, Bausher, Musandam, Dibba, Shinas, Liwa, Al Khabourah, Sohar, Saham, Salalah and Duqm participated.”
Talking about the objectives of the campaign, Kharousi mentioned, “We organised such cleaning campaigns in 2016, 2018 and 2019. We have also started workshops in schools to spread the importance of preserving the environment. We are also using the social media to reach our goal. The response from the public has been great so far.”
Kharousi mentioned that the teams for the campaigns have been selected via numerous social media channels. “We contacted more than 65 volunteer teams to join our campaign through Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Each team was clear about the theme and the purpose of such a campaign. The act of cleaning the environment is a way of showing people how we care for earth.”
He added, that their group also holds environmental competitions for university students. “Such competitions are a great way to kindle the spirit to conserve environment.”
Kharousi is determined to continue the great perform in future as nicely. “We will continue to conduct such clean-up campaigns in various wilayats of the sultanate. We want more youth to participate. It is the responsibility of all members of the community to join hands in keeping our beaches beautiful.”
