Oman LNG project to help 300 fishermen

Muscat – 

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has signed an agreement with Oman LNG Development Foundation to help 300 fishermen in South Sharqiyah. The project referred to as ‘Marine safety equipment bag’, will consist of security and navigation gear for fishermen. The price of the project is RO30,000.

The agreement was signed by H E Dr Hamad al Oufi, Undersecretary in MoAF, and Khalid al Massan, CEO of Oman LNG Development Foundation.

Ismail bin Ibrahim al Farsi, director of fisheries affairs at the Directorate General of Fisheries in South Sharqiyah, stated, “The project aims to guide and educate fishermen on the importance of owning marine safety bags, by providing them with navigational equipment, which will protect them while fishing. The bag includes a first-aid kit, a life jacket, a paddle, a fire blanket, lamps, mechanical tools and a navigation device.”

He added, “South Sharqiyah governorate is rich in fisheries wealth and has approximately 10,000 fishermen. Fish production reached about 86,000 tonnes in 2017.”
