The Fak Kurbah (redeeming anguish) initiative is becoming run by the Omani Lawyers Association (OLA) given that 2012.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim al Zadjali, president of OLA mentioned, “The 2019 initiative succeeded in releasing 673 prisoners from 40 out of the 44 jurisdictions across the governorates of the sultanate. The initiative was launched on April 11. The total amount raised was approximately RO508,220. The highest number of released prisoners was 58 in Muscat.”
During this 2019 edition, Dr Zadjali mentioned, there had been a number of noteworthy events. “First, a benefactor, currently third year in a row, has financed the release of all 24 insolvents who met the legal situations of Fak Kurba initiative, in Dhahirah courts.
“Another particular moment was the action of citizens from Barka who contributed to safe the release of 27 insolvents registered in Barka courts. Also, a number of social networking groups had been produced on WhatsApp to track the instances.
Dr Zadjali mentioned that a group of benefactors was also produced amongst Omantel staff to raise funds. “Last but not the least, Bank Muscat contributed to secure the release of 220 detainees. The bank had secured the release of 190 people in the previous Fak Kurba edition. “This year, we targeted more number of cases and OLA formed a committee to sort files. Also, RO2,000 was set aside for each case file. We approached private institutions and individuals to support this initiative.”
