Bidiyah residents clean trash from tourist websites

Muscat – 

One of the most well-known destinations in Oman for dune-bashing, desert crossings and camping, Bidiyah not too long ago saw a cleanliness drive involving residents not too long ago. The wilayat is a hot spot for vacationers especially throughout the winter season. 

Organised in cooperation with the Bidiyah Municipality, the cleanliness campaign mostly targeted well-known tourist websites.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Dr Mohammed al Hajri, a member of the Shura Council, and the organiser of the campaign stated, “We launched the initiative after we saw too much plastic trash strewn around. Unfortunately, this waste increases during winter which is a peak season for tourists. Our aim is to maintain the cleanliness of these desert camping sites. Such initiatives also help spread awareness on conserving the environment among the residents.”

Hajri also explained how he gathered help for the initiative. “We used the social media to disseminate the initiative’s goals. In cooperation with the Bidiyah Municipality we also produced many videos highlighting the importance of environment conservation to promote tourism. Through the initiative, we collected a lot of trash from different places in the wilayat. We hope more such initiatives are conducted across the sultanate.”
