Muscat –
Three persons have been arrested for hunting seven Nubian Ibex in Dhofar. On its twitter account, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) mentioned, “The ROP in cooperation with our wildlife experts arrested the accused from Dimit which is part of the wilayat of Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands.”
MECA mentioned that the accused have been referred to the judicial authorities for violating the Law on Nature Reserves and Wildlife Conservation.
The Nubian Ibex species is listed as vulnerable below the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. “There is currently lack of population data on Nubian Ibex. However, it is estimated that there are less than 10,000 mature individuals. There is a continuing decline rate estimated at ten per cent over two generations (generation length estimated at eight years),” states IUCN.
MECA calls on citizens and residents to report about such violations on its hotline 80071999 or inform the ROP on 9999.
