SQU, be’ah join hands to set up Reuse Centre

The cooperation programme aims to market the strategic objectives of be’ah with regard to attaining landfill diversion and market circular economy initiatives across the sultanate, by means of the establishment of a Reuse Centre. The proposed centre will be situated inside the premises of SQU.

Through the partnership, SQU and be’ah agree that the Reuse Centre would aid meet the objectives of each be’ah and SQU. These contain attaining SQU’s objectives of advertising campus sustainability very best practices from the campus neighborhood by encouraging active participation in green initiatives and attaining be’ah’s method of waste diversion from landfill by introducing waste reduction and reuse practices hence lowering carbon footprint and green gas emissions from landfilling.

The partnership also seeks to accomplish In-Country Value (ICV) by means of making employment, aiming to accomplish an Omanisation target of at least 90 per cent throughout the operational phase of the centre as the project progresses. The programme seeks to strengthen and unify current reuse efforts across the sultanate below a single umbrella to optimise the centre’s operations and meet the above stated objectives.

This Cooperation Programme will continue to be in force for period of 3 years. It was signed by H E Dr Ali bin Saud al Bimani, vice chancellor of SQU, and Tariq al Amri, chief executive officer of Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah). 

Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) launched its nation-wide waste diversion method, which estimates that by 2020, it will be important to divert 60 per cent of waste from landfills and 80 per cent by 2030. Be’ah focuses on forming a pre-disposal waste diversion mindset advertising the notion of 3Rs ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ by means of the establishment of a joint ‘Reuse Centre’ in collaboration with SQU, which is at present exploring possibilities to market its sustainable improvement culture and practices inside the campus neighborhood. The Reuse Centre initiative,  special in the whole GCC area,  will encourage university employees and students to be actively involved in waste reduction.
