They had been apprehended for violating provisions of the Marine Fishing Law and Protection of Living Aquatic Resources.
MoAF in cooperation with the Ministry of Manpower and the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has carried out a number of campaigns to arrest expatriates who function in the fishing field without having licence.
During crackdown operations, the MoAF inspectors arrested 30 expatriates in Sur, 24 in Mahout, 21 in Dhofar and 141 in Masirah.
The ministry is searching for to set up tracking devices on fishing boats to apprehend violators.
“We will soon be issuing a tender for purchasing tracking devices that will help us monitor the boats. These devices will help reduce the irregularities in the fisheries sector,” stated Eng Salman Khalaf al Subhi, director of Fisheries Control and Licensing Department at MoAF.
He added, “We seized dozens of illegal boats and fishing tools. The violators will be fined and imprisoned, and they will not be allowed to fish again in the sultanate.”
He stated the ministry is continuing to organise awareness campaigns in different components of the sultanate to discourage the practice of illegal fishing.
