The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) will be documenting the cuisine of each and every governorate to enhance tourism experiences of travellers. Speaking to Muscat Daily, Dr Lubna Badar Salim al Mazroei, head of research division, Directorate General of Planning, Follow-up and Information at MoT stated, interest in neighborhood cuisines is steadily increasing.
“Local cuisines hold much potential to contribute to the authenticity of the destination and strengthen the local economy. Local food attracts travellers. Tourists want to know and experience local and regional cuisines.” She stated that this project will be undertaken in cooperation with the Sultan Qaboos University. “This will also help the SMEs come up with more projects in future. Each governorate has a unique cuisine. Locals can prepare cuisine of the area and sell it to tourists. Those providing homestay services too can offer authentic food of the area. This will help reflect the history and culture of the area.”
Dr Lubna stated that documentation will aid in future references. “Many countries in Europe offer cookery classes, shows and have caravans selling local food. We want to replicate the model here. This will help tourists understand the rich tradition of our country.”
