At present, a particular person has to wait for 12 months to donate blood following returning from a malaria-endemic nation.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Dr Zainab al Fana Alarimi, director of blood banks solutions, Ministry of Health stated, “There are plans to conduct tests on people who visit malaria-endemic area/ country. We will allow them to donate blood if the test is negative. So instead of waiting for one year, it will probably be 120 days after returning from a malaria-endemic country. We are trying to get the instruments and the reagents for the test as soon as possible, maybe, by the beginning of next year.”
Dr Zainab stated that the ministry follows the World Health Organization’s suggestions on choice criteria of blood donors.
“They must be healthy to ensure that the donation will not cause any harm to the donor. The donor should not be more than 65 years and not less than 18. Also, the donor must weigh at least 50kg.”
She stated that the aim is to supply safest blood to all these in require.
