Expats to renew driving licences each two years from March 1: ROP

However, expats who presently have licences valid for 10 years will have to renew it only right after the expiry of their licence.

The announcement is component of the new site visitors guidelines announced on Monday.

Among other modifications contain introduction of a black point program for new drivers. New drivers in Oman will be issued short-term driving licences for 12 months beneath a probation scheme.

According to the ROP, drivers who get much more than ten ‘black’ points on their short-term driving licences will have to take much more driving lessons. Temporary driving licences will be extended by only 1 year for a new driver who earns much more than seven black points in a year.

However, Omani drivers who earn six or significantly less black points in the course of the probation period will get a ten-year driving licence.

Seatbelts have also been produced mandatory for all passengers in a car. ROP has mentioned that all passengers inside a car will have to put on seatbelts, which includes these sitting in the backseat. Currently, it is compulsory for only passengers sitting in the front seats to put on seatbelts. Also, kid restraints have been produced mandatory for kids beneath 4 years.

Other modifications contain hefty penalties for significant site visitors offences.

There has been an boost in fines for 52 offences which includes penalty for parking in spaces meant for the disabled, which has been elevated from RO10 to RO50. Trucks that overtake will also have to spend a fine of RO50. A fine of RO50 will also be imposed on drivers [including women] who cover their faces..

In a new improvement, females will also be permitted to drive taxis from March 1.
