Apart from the Ancient City of Qalhat, from the GCC nations Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahsa Oasis and the UAE’s Khor Dubai are also up for evaluation at the ongoing 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Bahrain, which will run until July four.
The opening ceremony of the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee took place on Sunday at the Bahrain National Theatre in the presence of Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa of Bahrain.
“It is significant that this year the committee is being held in an Arab country,” stated Audrey Azoulay, director-common, Unesco.
“The idea of World Heritage has become a global norm,” added Audrey, stressing that websites these days are facing many threats such as armed conflict, illicit trafficking, speedy urbanisation and climate modify. “Of the 82 World Heritage sites in the Arab region, 17 are in danger,” she noted, recalling that these difficulties did not only effect websites inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Audrey stated, “Across Iraq, over 100 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed, many of which are in Mosul.”
Oman created an official nomination to the Unesco World Heritage Committee for inscription of Ancient City of Qalhat in 2016.
For inclusion on the World Heritage List, websites should be of outstanding universal worth and meet at least a single out of ten choice criteria. Oman has nominated Qalhat website below criterion numbers III, V and VI.
Under Criterion III, a website should bear a special or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilisation which is living or which has disappeared.
