MECA launches contest to reduce plastic pollution

Muscat – 

To reduce down on plastic waste and encourage the establishment of plastic recycling firms, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) on Tuesday launched the ‘Best Environmental Initiative Award for Reducing Plastic Pollution’ contest beneath the auspices of its Undersecretary H E Najeeb bin Ali al Rawas.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official in MECA, stated, “It is about raising awareness about plastic waste, and getting ideas and solutions on alternatives to plastics. It also aims to encourage the establishment of factories and companies interested in recycling plastics.” Talking about the contest, he stated, “There are four categories – for schools, colleges, voluntary teams and individuals, and small and medium enterprises. Each category will have two winners with total prizes worth RO5,200.”

He added that oil and gas organizations are not permitted to participate in the contest. The entry can only be primarily based on 1 initiative or project. Organisers have the correct to retain the winning project/thought. “The topic should have a direct effect on cutting down plastic consumption.” Submissions for the contest can be created till October 31, 2019.
