Oman Astronomical Society (OAS) is cooperating with the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF) and Sultan Qaboos University to zero in on the candidates who will be educated to turn out to be analog astronauts.
OAS is also in talks with foreign space firms to produce a lot more understanding and instruction possibilities for Omani youths.
Speaking to Muscat Daily
, Abdulwahab al Busaidi, head of observatory, OAS mentioned, “After the productive completion of the Mars Analog Mission carried out by the Austrian Space Forum in February 2018 in Dhofar area, Oman now desires to be at the forefront in space programme.
“We want to launch our own satellites in the next few years. All countries are engaging in space programmes. Gulf countries including Oman are showing great interest in them.”
Last year in February, OeWF in cooperation with the Oman National Steering Committee for AMADEE-18 (Mars Analogue Mission) carried out the simulation project in the Dhofar area.
A tiny field crew carried out experiments preparing for future manned missions to Mars. Tests and experiments have been carried out in the fields of engineering, planetary surface operations, astrobiology, geophysics/geology, life sciences and other locations.
Busaidi mentioned, “Four Omanis (Eng Waleed al Abri, Eng Yaarub al Busaidi, Eng Saleh al Abri and Ammar al Harthi) have currently undergone an astronomy course in OeWF in the summer season of 2018. It is element of the pact with OeWF to send our candidates for instruction to turn out to be analog astronauts.
“It does not imply that these candidates following instruction turn out to be astronauts and prepared to go to space. It indicates you get a qualification in astronomy. We want the Omani youth to get information about space exploration.
“Those who will be sent for training will have to undergo many tests. It is now a question of time when space programme in Oman will be a reality. This is just the beginning.”
