Muscat International Film Festival to mark 10 years of Omani cinema

Presented by the Ministry of Tourism in association with Oman Airports, the festival seeks to treat film buffs to a plethora of films more than six days, announced officials at a press conference on Sunday.

From Italian action hero Franco Nero, to Bollywood star from Nepal Manisha Koirala, Indian–American award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, Egyptian Hollywood actor Amr Waked, Syrian actor and filmmaker Ghassan Massoud and veteran Egyptian director Ali Badrakhan, the festival will be attended by celebrities from across the planet.

The festival, which will be held from March 26 to 31 at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) auditorium in Seeb will this year highlight ten glorious years of Omani cinema. The quantity ten figures like a recurring motif across events on all six days. From the screening of ten best brief films to honouring ten celebrities and ten artistes, each international and Omanis.

Mohammed al Kindi, president of Oman Film Society (OFS) and MIFF stated, “This is the tenth year of the festival and the celebrations are going to be gala. We will screen 115 films in total under different categories including a retrospective section featuring films by Salim Bahwan as a tribute to him. A special film named Escape to Victory too will be screened. Three films Dear Maya, Queen of Katwe and Pihu too will be premiered at the festival.”

He added that the festival this year will dedicate two days (March 28, 30) to relevant social themes such as ladies energy and children’s rights. The opening and closing ceremonies on March 26 and 31 will be red carpet events.

Some of the artistes who will attend the festival consist of, Swedish-Lebanese singer Maher Zain, Grammy award-winning Japanese flautist Kitaro, planet-whistling champion Dutchman Geert Chatrou, Danish-Palestinian percussionist Simona Abdallah, Russian Jaw harpist Olga Uutai, Indian saxophonist S Lavanya and Oman’s effectively-recognized Munshid singers Watasimu, well-known singer Haitham Mohammed Rafi and talented Oud artist Ziyad Harbi and band.
