The government is thinking about a proposal to legalise the operations of Airbnb in Oman. Airbnb offers vacation cottages, apartments, homestays, hostel beds or hotel rooms on lease or rental basis across the globe via its portal.
On the sidelines of third Annual Hotelier Summit GCC on Wednesday, Eng Mohammed Mahmoud al Zadjali, director basic of Investor Services and Quality Control in the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) stated, “We are functioning to make it legal and safeguard the tourism sector from any low high quality service. Focus is essentially on the high quality.
“We want to make sure that the bed and breakfast service provided is licensed and as per approved standards set by Airbnb. We are working together to make it legal, make it formal.”
Zadjali stated that at present these who have registered their accommodations on Airbnb are not legal. “As they are not licensed from MoT, this is illegal. We do not mind they register with Airbnb but they need to be registered and licensed through the ministry.”
Airbnb, a well-liked portal has lodging listings in thousands of cities across the globe.
